Charity

HFTP Chicago has chosen Journeys from PADS to Hope as our 50/50 Charity for 2007-2008. Their Mission is to provide services for the homeless and at risk individuals and families in the Northwest Suburbs.

During the 2005-2006 season, Journeys from PADS to HOPE served over 670 guests through the HOPE Center (1140 E. Northwest Highway) and the 18 faith-based PADS sites throughout the northwest suburbs. The HOPE Center received over 6,193 visits from people requesting services, while the PADS sites provided 10,912 overnight stays and 33,736 meals throughout the season. Through the combined efforts of our volunteers and staff, we were successful in transitioning 48 clients out of homelessness and 257 clients in the past 5 PADS seasons out of an emotionally degrading life and into one of hope and independence, giving clients a much needed sense of belonging.

Our commitment and our hearts know no bounds. A staff of 15 are assisted by 48 HOPE Center volunteers as well as a pool of 3,000 PADS volunteers across 18 sites. At the HOPE Center we are able to provide case management, mental health counseling and vocational services. Our sites provide over 42,775 volunteer hours a year, which translates into countless opportunities for human engagement and hope for a better future for our homeless neighbors.

The Reality of Homelessness in the NW Suburbs

There are over 3,000 reported cases of homelessness in all of suburban Cook County*. In the northwest suburbs alone, there are 1,200 homeless people accessing shelters with approximately 400 additional homeless people residing on streets, in cars, and throughout forest preserves.

Homelessness does not discriminate and can be chronic or situational. It affects a variety of people including youth, families with children, single/married adults, and senior citizens. A large number of homeless have served in the armed forces. Many times these individuals have no healthy support system.

Diverse educational backgrounds are found among the homeless, ranging from no education to post-graduate degrees.
